Laura Jean Arwood, 61, of Raleigh NC, passed away suddenly on February 24, 2022. Laura was a free spirit, who celebrated life in her own special ways. She was born in Charlotte NC, the daughter of Homer Alexander and Bertie Taylor Arwood. The family moved to Burlington NC, where she graduated from Southern Alamance High School. She earned a BS degree in Animal Science and PhD in Genetics from NC State University. She completed post-doctoral training at the University of Chicago.
Her first career path led to several professorial teaching appointments, including St. Andrews University (Laurinburg, NC) and Marist College (Poughkeepsie, NY). She published both research and teaching articles in peer reviewed journals. After retirement, Laura made her way back to the Raleigh area where she pursued a second vocation, returning to the arts. Even as an undergraduate, she was involved in theatrical productions performed at Thompson Theater (NCSU). Her renewed passion led to numerous acting roles across the Triangle with Cary Playwrights Forum (among other groups), where she occasionally served as a director and producer in local productions. She always gained the respect and admiration of her fellow theatre-folk. Eventually, Laura challenged herself and competed as a playwright, honored that local and out-of-state theater companies performed her works.
Laura was intelligent and clever, a giver in life. She volunteered as a reader for the blind (Triangle Radio Reading Service). There she also assisted as a trainer and wrote various handouts that are still in use. She donated blood on a regular basis to the American Red Cross. She shared special bonds with all creatures, great and small (horses, birds, cats, dogs, even squirrels). Whatever the chosen endeavor, she poured herself into the task with gusto.
Laura is survived by a sister, Dr. Debra A. Clare and her husband Dr. James H. Clare (Cary, NC); a brother-in-law, Billy Carter (Elon, NC); a nephew, Dr. Scott Carter and his wife, Katherine Carter McEnaney, and their son, Alexander (Madison, WI). “Ms. Maybe”, her beloved, faithful, feline companion, will continue to reside in Raleigh, NC. Laura leaves behind several aunts and many cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, and sister, Sharon Carter. Laura cultivated life-long friendships which will live in perpetuity. Her memory will be cherished.
A celebration of Laura’s life will be held at Pure Life Theater Company, 3801 Hillsborough Street (Suite 113), Raleigh, NC 27607, on April 30th at 11:00 am.
