Marcelle T. Stone

Marcy was born Tina Marcelle Toney on September 25, 1930 in Rutherfordton, NC. She was raised in a log house on a dirt road in Rutherford County, NC. With the assistance of family friends, she was able to attend the Baptist Hospital Nursing School in Winston-Salem, NC, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and went on to have a long career as a Registered Nurse, including a period working in the Intensive Care Unit at the Rutherford County Hospital.

Soon after nursing school, in 1952, Marcy married her husband, Marion Richard Stone. They had three children: Nancy Stone Dixon, Marion Richard Stone Jr, and Gregory Alan Stone. Marcy and her family lived briefly in Burlington, NC, and then spent 11 years in Florida before moving back to Rutherford County. In her final years, Marcy moved to Cary, NC to live near her son Greg. Marcy’s husband passed away in 1999. She is survived by her three children, four grandchildren (Bruce Dixon, Alan Stone, Leigh Stone, and Meredith Stone), one precious great-granddaughter Rosalie Dixon, her brother Johnny Toney and his wife Kathryn, and several nieces and nephews.

Through most of Marcy’s life, she struggled with rheumatoid arthritis. Some days were worse than others, but she found strength in her faith, her family, and her friends. She had numerous friends because wherever she went, her warm smile and kind heart made it easy for her to make friends. Many of those friendships were formed at the Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church, where she was a member for most of her life, and where she led a Bethel Series study group. She also had a passion for sewing, and loved to sew with her granddaughters.

A memorial service will be held at the Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church on February 25th at 2pm. A second memorial service will be held in early March at the Woodland Community Church in Cary. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be sent to Woodland Community Church (300 Kildaire Woods Drive, Cary NC 27511) or Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church (252 North Washington Street, Rutherfordton NC 28139).
