Mark Preston Honey, age 74, peacefully transitioned on Friday, June 17, 2022, surrounded by family and friends. Born in Concord, NC, on July 23, 1947, Mark was the son of the late Anthony “TA” Honey and Alys Fuller Honey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife Julie Gilbert Honey.
Mark grew up in Charlotte, NC where he was a member of Dilworth United Methodist Church until graduating from Myers Park High School. Mark proudly served in the US Army, where he spent most of 1968 stationed in Korea helping to secure American interests on the DMZ, only returning for the birth of his daughter. Mark was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and loved all things Tar Heel, most especially Carolina basketball. He was thrilled to know that his granddaughter Shelton had chosen to attend UNC-CH this fall.
He took extreme pride in his career, spending the last 20 years in Sales & Marketing at Neomonde Baking Co. with friends that became family; especially DeGaulle Saleh, whom he considered his brother. A trip to Lebanon in 2011 with DeGaulle was a highlight in his life. Along with his love of sports, he was an avid reader, film buff and enjoyed a tough crossword puzzle. He always knew when rib-eyes were on sale at Harris Teeter and his all-time favorite movie was The Wizard of Oz.
Family meant everything to Mark. A loving son and brother, he was an active and mischievous child whose antics challenged his parents. He kept his family in constant laughter, and he was rarely ever still. He loved spending holidays at his sister’s house every year. Mark was a devoted father and grandfather, spending most of his free time the last few years traveling to and from Rocky Mount to watch his grandchildren play sports. He was their biggest fan.
Mark is survived by his daughter, Sherry Honey Barrow and husband, Klay, of Raleigh; his son Tommy Honey and wife, Kate, of Rocky Mount; and his grandchildren Shelton and Thomas Honey. He is also survived by his sister Toni Downey and husband, Carneal, of Raleigh; first wife, friend and confidant Cynthia Neal of Raleigh; niece Jennifer Taylor and husband, Jay, of Raleigh; niece Ami Cook, and husband, Donald, of Winston-Salem; and numerous cousins.
The family would like to thank the amazing nurses and caregivers in the ICU at Wake Med Cary for the compassionate and gentle care shown to Mark.
A private service will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2022. Memorial contributions can be made in Mark’s memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation online at T2T.org.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.BrownWynneCary.com for the Honey family.
