

Born in Gaston County, NC on October 5, 1938, Mary graduated from Frank L. Ashley High School, Gastonia NC. After marriage, she lived in Lynchburg VA for 14 years. She then resided in Raleigh, NC for the remainder of her life.
Mary was a dedicated daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She is preceded in death by her mother, Janie Elizabeth Warren Large.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Max Vernon Griffin (66 years of marriage), daughter Karen Elizabeth Stallings (Cliff), son Michael Angelo Griffin (Loretta), and daughter Nancy Diana Schaeffer (Jay), as well as her grandson Reagan Alexander Stallings, and grandson Brandon Clifton Stallings.
Mary was a detailed oriented person. She loved all craft making, and often could be found cross stitching elaborate pieces (suitable for framing), or crocheting and knitting beautiful scarves and blankets. She frequently gifted her creations to family members and friends. Mary would even give her art to people she newly met. Many of her cherished pieces reside in her family members’ homes.
Mary was a patient teacher. She not only made clothing for her children when they were young, she later taught them how to sew.
A woman of many talents, Mary was particularly skilled at games like solitaire and word search.
She enjoyed cooking specialty items such as salmon cakes, beef vegetable soup, potato salad, onion rings, and making homemade fudge.
Mary enjoyed reading novels, annual travel to the beach with her friends, and travels to visit family on occasion.
Mary was well loved by her family and friends, and a lifelong Christian who was gentle natured and kind spirited. She was always thinking of others, putting their feelings first.
The family will receive friends on Monday, December 2, 2024 from 3-6 pm at Brown Wynne Funeral Home in Cary, NC. Mary’s funeral will be held at Brown Wynne Cary on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at 11:00 am. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at Memorial Cemetery, 1000 Fairground Road, Dunn, NC.
