Rebecca “ Becky” Monk Wooten, 97, of Cary, North Carolina, died peacefully on February 6, 2025. She was born October 20, 1927 in High Point, North Carolina and was the last surviving child of Joseph Hampton Monk, Sr. and Mary Josina Stokes Monk.
Becky was a graduate of Hugh Morson High School and attended Peace College and she would always say, “way before they let the boys in”. She along with her other four siblings grew up in the two-story home on the corner of Park Drive in Cameron Village of Raleigh. Becky was an excellent homemaker, a devoted sister, wife, mother and grandmother. She was a caring individual who loved her family deeply and made friends with just about everyone that she would meet.
She and her husband, Shade moved to Cary in 1958 where they had their home of 52 years built in the Greenwood Forest neighborhood. After deciding that she was ready to downsize, she choose to make her new home at Waltonwood of Cary. As always, she made fast friends with the “new people” to the area and of course already had some of her “Old Cary” friends living there too.
Becky was a member of the Cary XYZ Club, the ladies Greenwood Forest Bridge Club and the Path Finder’s Sunday School Class. She was the Master and Queen Designer of Becky’s Homemade Greeting Cards. Her joy and mission in life was to bring a smile to someone’s day by designing, making, and printing one of her special cards and mailing them to people on their special occasion or get-well salutations.
She is survived by her son: Shade A. “Chip” Wooten, Jr and wife Lisa of Cary; daughter: BJ Gibbs and husband John, of Waxhaw; five grandchildren: Shade Allen Wooten, III and Melina Gozzo Wooten, of Raleigh, Bryant Wooten and John Wayand, of Cary, Lezlie Williams of Raleigh, Lindsay Gibbs Sansbury and Griff Sansbury, of Charlotte, and Gordon Gibbs, of Asheville. Becky is also survived by two great-granddaughters: Sutton and Margaret “Maisie” Sansbury, of Charlotte; and nephews: Mike Lancaster, Joe Monk, Stokes Ritchie and Mac Ritchie; along with her Wooten nieces and nephews.
Becky was predeceased by her husband: Shade A. Wooten Sr.; her parents: Joseph and Mary Monk; her in-laws: Jack and Dixie Wooten; her siblings: Joe Monk Jr., Geraldine Monk Ritchie, Elizabeth Monk Lasley, Martha Monk; and so many of her extended Wooten family in-law members that were like brothers and sisters to her. Becky was also predeceased by her special friend and one that she loved dearly: Malcolm “Mal” Chapman.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Jessica DelCantl at Heartland Hospice and Theo Misaras of Eventus Home Health. They would also like to express their gratitude to the full staff of Waltonwood Memory Care of Cary for the great care and love that they gave to Becky.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, February 13, 2025 from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm in the Sanctuary of White Plains United Methodist Church in Cary, with Funeral Services to begin at 2:00 pm. Entombment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh.
