

“Bob” was born in Iredell County on December 23, 1931 to Julius and Ethel Wiles Holland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Ruth Holland Burgess, Elaine Holland Baggerly, and Phyllis Holland; and two brothers, Dwight Holland and Bill Holland.
He is survived by his wife Evelyn Holland; his beloved children, Bonita Denise Holland, Robert Nelson Holland (wife Kay), and Jennifer Holland Murphy (husband Philip); and his beloved grandchildren Lauren Michelle Holland, Cade Morley Yates Murphy, Tristan Sawyer MacLeod Murphy, and Lauch Hyatt Gentry Murphy; a brother Jimmie Holland (wife Mary Francis); Sisters in law Clara Rogers, and Donna Duncan (husband Fred); and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was a 1950 graduate of Union Grove high school. He was drafted into the US Army in 1952 and received a deferment and worked on the family farm until his brother got out of the army in Korea January 1954. Bob was stationed in Fort Lewis Washington and on January 7, 1956, he volunteered to go to Germany with 11 months remaining in the army. He was honorably discharged in 1956. After his military service he attended Mitchell College in Statesville, NC where he met Evelyn Yates, and they were married in 1957.
In 1958 Bob began working for Interstate Equipment Company as a parts manager and was promoted to sales within the first 18 months. At IEC he promoted the sales of highway construction equipment, including asphalt and concrete plants, and sand and gravel and aggregate plants. He moved his family from Fayetteville to Cary in July 1963 and was soon after promoted to Branch Manager, then became vice president/general manager for North and South Carolina. He worked almost 43 years with the same company, retiring at age 69.
Bob was an active member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, as a Sunday school teacher, and the chairman of the church’s building and grounds committee. He served the town of Cary as a Parks and Recreation softball coach for many years.
Bob was an avid golfer and woodworker. He loved golfing with the Cary Seniors and with a variety of dear friends on a weekly basis as long as he was able. He donated countless hours to his church, family, friends, and neighbors building cabinets, repairing home damage, and renovating kitchens and bathrooms. He loved creating furniture and made book shelves and cabinets for schools and churches And gave bedroom suits to each of his three children. Bob also loved to read and study his Bible. He used his studies to teach men’s Sunday school for several years. He loved his family and his Lord.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Cary. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
