Ruby Hines Proctor, age 84, of Cary and Atlantic Beach, NC, died August 6, 2021. She was the daughter of the late Hubert and Dollie Hines of Saratoga, NC. Ruby attended Saratoga High School where she graduated as salutatorian in 1954. She was active in many school activities and was a star basketball player. She attended Peace College in 1954-55 where she earned a business degree. Following graduation, she was employed by Southern Bell Telephone Company in Raleigh as Administrative Assistant to the District Director.
In 1956, she married her High School sweetheart Dalton R Proctor, also of Saratoga. In 1958, she and Dalton moved to Yanceyville, NC, where she was employed by Nationwide Insurance Company. During her stay in Yanceyville, she was active in church organizations and community affairs. Ruby and Dalton’s daughter, Pamela Kay, was born in August, 1960.
In 1963, she and her family moved to Snow Hill, NC. Her son, Anthony, was born in June, 1969. While in Snow Hill, she was employed by USDA/ASCS, and was once again active in church and community affairs.
In 1970, the family moved to Cary, NC, and Ruby began what would become a 24-year career with First Union National Bank. She retired in August of 1994 as a Regional Operations Assistant for Bank Operations for the Eastern Region.
Through the years, she was known as “Miss Ruby” to the Extension 4-H Agents across NC and the United States. Many of them still tell tales of her famous batches of fudge. She was inducted into the NC 4-H Hall of Fame on July 20, 2010. Ruby was devoted and dedicated in her roles both as a wife, in support of her husband’s career, and as a loving mother to her two children. She was especially supportive of her mother, Dollie Hines, during her life.
In retirement, she enjoyed the family home in Atlantic Beach. She was known there for her hospitality, meals, and especially that aforementioned fudge. She will be sorely missed by her friends there.
Ruby is survived by her sister and husband, Edith and Jimmie Coley; her daughter and husband Pam and Len Hatton; and her son and wife, Anthony and Sheila Proctor. She is also survived by her grandson, Jesse Hatton and her step-granddaughter Briannan Jasek-Snow.
Ruby requested a private, intimate graveside service with immediate family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Ruby H. Proctor Scholarship Fund, 634 Henderson St, Mount Olive College, NC 28365.
