S. B. White Jr.

S.B. White, Jr., 82, of Cary, NC died April 19, 2011. He was born in Statesville, NC to Stamey B. White and Bessie Ann Wooten. S.B. was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Hugh, James and William, and by his sisters Lois and Sadie.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jan Thorpe White; sons Bill and wife Maureen, Stuart and wife Heather; daughters Ellen and husband Mike Fish, and Barbara Jo; many beloved grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins; and two sisters, Irene Ijames and Marie Shumaker.

S.B. was a graduate of Union Grove High School and Appalachian State University. He served four years in the U.S. Navy. He graduated magna cum laude from NC State University, received a Master’s degree from Cornell University and completed coursework for a Ph.D. at NC State University. He was a member of Gamma Sigma Delta and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. He spent the last 26 years of his career at RTI and retired in 1993 as a senior statistician. He was an active member of White Plains UMC and Pathfinders Sunday School Class, serving on various boards and committees. S.B. was a 32nd degree Mason with Grassy Knob Lodge in Union Grove, NC.

A memorial service will be held at White Plains UMC in Cary on Sunday, May 15 at 2:00 p.m.
