Born on October 6, 1947, in Lawndale, North Carolina, Spurgeon was the son of James Rector Cooke and Iris Canipe Cooke. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he shared 56 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Sara Newton Cooke.
Spurgeon dedicated 44 years of service as an electrical engineer with Carolina Power and Light, later Duke Energy. He was a longtime member of Westwood Baptist Church and the Cary Kiwanis Club, where he found fulfillment in community and fellowship. A passionate supporter of NC State athletics, he rarely missed a game and also took great pride in maintaining his yard.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Newton Cooke; his son, Jeffery Michael Cooke (Elizabeth Joy Cooke); his daughter, Rebecca Cooke Von Hoene (Nicholas Tyson Von Hoene); and five cherished grandchildren: Alyssa, Brian, and Michael Cooke, and Holden and Liesl Von Hoene.
Spurgeon will be remembered for his quiet strength, deep love for his family, and unwavering Wolfpack spirit.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, September 1, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Westwood Baptist Church in Cary, North Carolina.
