Stacy “Butch” G. Smith, 67, of Cary, died suddenly of unknown cause on May 9, 2018. Butch was born and raised in Dudley, NC. He attended and graduated from Southern Wayne High ’68 before attending and graduating from NC State in ’72. During college, he met his wife, Linda then began his career in the Raleigh area, working for the North Carolina Division of Air Quality. He went on to work as an Environmental Consultant for many engineering firms. Having partially retired, he was currently working for UNC as a consultant.
Butch loved spending his down time hunting, fishing, learning about history, and doing family genealogy research. He was also a fantastic story teller, practical joker and was always the life of the party. He dearly loved his special rescue dog, Gracie.
Butch is survived by his wife, Linda O. Smith; sons, Stacy Phillip Smith and Kevin Gray Smith and his fiancé, Laurice Holland; grandchildren, Karis Elizabeth Smith and Maisy Jane Howard; brothers, Steve Smith and his wife, Laura, Craig Smith and his wife, Debbie, and Blake Smith and his wife, Katerina; and half-brother, Lamar Huntley and several nieces and nephews. Butch was preceded in death by his parents, Gray and Elizabeth Smith; and his infant son.
A visitation will be held Monday, May 14 from 6:00-8:00pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road in Cary. A funeral will be held Tuesday, May 15 at 3:00pm, also at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home. Burial will take place Wednesday, May 16 at 1:00pm at Wayne Memorial Park, 2925 US-117, Dudley, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
