

Born on January 11, 1923 in Richmond Hill, NY, she was the daughter of the late James Calcanes and Bertha Lavis.
While Stella had several employment ventures in her life, her most cherished career was being a homemaker. Stella was dedicated to her husband, two children and four grandchildren. She was artistic, creative, and always thrived on learning new skills that would beautify and comfort the lives of those around her. Most importantly, Stella was a Christian. She loved the Lord and honored Him well through the gift He gave her of servitude and compassion. Today she is with her Savior and basks in His glory.
Stella was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, James. She leaves behind her daughter Priscilla and husband Tom Hoffman of Cary; son, Bill Vanarthos and wife Jill of Cary; grandchildren Greg and wife Nicole, Jessica, Olivia and Madalyn. She is also survived by her brother Paul of Florida and many other family members and friends who loved her dearly.
Stella’s family would like to especially thank the staff at The Oaks of Mayview as well as Gladys Kimani for the excellent care, compassion and love they showed her.
Family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon, November 9th from 3:00 to 4:30pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road in Cary followed by prayer and a celebration of her life service beginning at 4:30pm . At this time everyone will have an opportunity to share sentiments and special memories of Stella. After the service, the family will receive friends until 7:00pm.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, November 10th at 10:00am at All Saints Orthodox Church at 520 Buck Jones Road, Raleigh with interment to follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Eastern NC Chapter.
