Paul Theodore Aroney was born in Traverse City, Michigan, on May 23, 1969. He spent his formative years in the Wolverine State with his parents, grandparents, cousins, and two older brothers, Mark and Mike.
As a youth, Paul excelled at sports, especially wrestling and football. He attended Western Michigan University, where he made many friends and memories as a member and officer of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.
After college, Paul explored several careers, transitioning from elite security at a nuclear power plant as a Tactical Response Officer to roles in plastic injection manufacturing and quality control management for automobile component production. Later, he co-owned an expedited logistics and transportation company serving automotive suppliers in the Detroit area.
He eventually moved to Ohio and spent several years there before relocating to Arizona around 2013. He settled in Casa Grande and began a new career in local schools as a teacher and substitute. During his time in education, Paul taught hundreds of students and left a lasting impression on many, who affectionately called him Mr. Paul.
An avid outdoorsman, Paul enjoyed camping, hiking, and kayaking. He spent many weeks each year exploring Arizona’s parks, mountains, deserts, canyons, and rivers. He often said he was happiest sleeping under a clear, dark sky, surrounded by nature.
His constant companion on these excursions was Maggie Mae, the Australian Kelpie Paul adopted after arriving in Casa Grande. Maggie is well-known to all of Paul’s friends and acquaintances.
A certified service dog, Maggie learned to read with small children and visit nursing homes and hospices, bringing comfort to many. Maggie and Paul were rarely separated.
Paul’s love for Maggie inspired years of volunteer work at the Valley Humane Society and its Casa Grande thrift store, Bow Wow Meow. He was a near-constant presence in the store, helping customers and encouraging donations to support the Society.
Paul left a lasting mark on Casa Grande and beyond. He is mourned by many students, colleagues, volunteers, and friends. He will always be remembered for his vibrant personality, tireless dedication, and seemingly endless energy.
We celebrate his life and many contributions.
Paul is survived by his brothers, Mark Aroney and Mike Aroney, his first cousin, Cheri Fulsome, his mother, Effie Lorraine Hatcher, and, of course, his beloved Maggie Mae.
A memorial service and Celebration of Life for Paul will be held on Friday, January 23, from 3:30pm to 5:30pm at J Warren Funeral Home, 525 N Peart Road, in Casa Grande. In lieu of flowers, donations to Valley Humane Society in Paul’s name are encouraged.
