Tom was born June 29, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in the Chicago area and graduated from Carl Sandburg High School in 1966. Following graduation, he studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology, laying the foundation for a career defined by technical skill and leadership. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, earning a bronze star for his service.
Tom devoted more than three decades to a distinguished career in construction management and project planning. He retired in 2019, leaving behind a professional legacy marked by excellence, dedication, and a deep pride in his craft.
In retirement, Tom embraced his many passions. He could often be found on the golf course, enjoying one of his beautiful homes in Palmer or Maricopa, cheering on his beloved Chicago Bears, or working on his Audis (which rewarded him by constantly breaking). He had a lifelong love for high-performance motorcycles, a hobby that connected him to a community of many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Jacqueline “Jackie” Thurbee, and his brother, John “Dingle” Thurbee. He is survived by his wife, Jackie; his sister, Sue; his sons, Nate and Josh; and a large circle of extended family and friends.
Tom will be remembered as a man who built things—structures, systems, and a beautiful life. He did so with precision, a touch of stubbornness, and a legendary sense of humor.
A celebration of life and love will be held on May 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in Tinley Park, IL
