Frank was born on March 10, 1933 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the eldest of two children of Francis Joseph and Delia Theresa (McCaffrey) Doherty both of whom preceded Frank in death. He graduated from Olney High School in 1952 after which he attended Pennsylvania State University where he met his first wife Sara Margaret “Margaret” Sensenig and graduated with a B.S. Mechanical Engineering in 1956. After his college graduation, he proudly served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1956-1958. After Frank completed his service he and Margaret married on June 13, 1958 in Alexandria, Virginia. He and Margaret were blessed with 6 children during their 21 years of marriage which ended after her tragic death on June 20, 1979.
Frank began his first career as a technical salesperson for Honeywell Information Systems at its Harrisburg, Pennsylvania office. His career with Honeywell spanned nearly 35 years which took him from Harrisburg to Chicago to Philadelphia and finally to Denver. In his final position with Honeywell, he served in the position of National Sales Manager, Honeywell Visitronic in its Denver, Colorado offices from which he retired.
Frank found his passion as an entrepreneur in his second career as a Broker/Realtor. Eventually, he opened his own agency, Doherty & Company in Castle Rock, Colorado. Frank served as President of the Douglas County Board of Realtors. He treated each of his clients as if they were a member of his family, and reveled in making their dreams come true. He loved his community and was commonly known as Mr. D by all who were fortunate to know and love him. He was fortunate to be able to do what he loved and continued to operate Doherty & Company until his death.
Frank’s greatest love was his family; Frank married Edna Darlene Huffman on November 14, 1980 and added another two step-children to his family. Edna was Frank’s great love and best friend throughout their 31 year union. His family continued to expand over his lifetime with addition of 15 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He was a voracious reader and found true joy in sharing his love a good book with his grandchildren. He was fearlessly patriotic with a passion for our military and helping those in need in the military, especially those serving oversees. He was loved beyond words and all forms of measure. We will miss him greatly but we will carry his love and playful spirit with us always. We love you so much Frank, Pop-Pop, Mr. D, Dad!
He is survived by his wife, Edna; his 8 children Shelagh Peterson, David Huffman, Francis Doherty, Jr., Brad Huffman, Sean Doherty, Margaret Reich, Padraig Doherty, and Brendan Doherty; his grandchildren JordAnne Huffman, Matthew Huffman, Justin Huffman, Wyatt Huffman, Madison Huffman, Samuel Huffman, Padraig Peterson, Lindsey Peterson, Francis Doherty III, Sara Doherty, Daisy Reich, Lily Reich, Alden Doherty, Ciaran Doherty, Ashlyn Doherty and great-granddaughter Ella Malkowski; along with his sister Anita Smith, his “seventh” son Wes Mitchell, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
