Nancy Em Halverhout, 71, of Castle Pines Village, Colorado, passed away on November 26, 2024, after suffering a massive stroke three days previously. She was born in Davenport, Iowa on February 4, 1953, and lived in Davenport and Des Moines, Iowa until 1968 when her family moved to Overland Park, Kansas. Nancy earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and a Master’s degree (with honors) in Public Health from the University of Kansas Medical School. Nancy married Winn William Halverhout on December 23, 1976, in Prairie Village, Kansas and they remained married for nearly 48 years. Nancy worked several years in information technology and data management in the healthcare industry before retiring to her full-time occupation in charge of happiness in her marriage with Winn.
Nancy and Winn lived together in the Kansas City area from 1978 until 2009, when Winn’s career took them to Colorado. While in Kansas City, Nancy became an avid gardener and an active participant in dog agility training and competitions, earning numerous state and national awards with Spirit, her beloved Belgian Tervuren. In Colorado, Nancy joined and eventually served in leadership positions in several flower show groups in Denver and Colorado Springs. Upon learning of Nancy’s passing, members of those groups described Nancy in glowing terms, including a “beautiful soul,” a “loving, caring person with a generous heart,” the “kindest, most loving person I ever knew” and many more similar descriptions.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Laverne L. and Lois C. Fleege, of Overland Park, Kansas. She is survived by her husband Winn, her two sisters, Sally Lowther (David) of Cary, North Carolina, and Julie Evenson (Curt) of Springfield, Missouri, and Winn’s mother, Karen M. Halverhout, and sister, Anne Curzon (Tom), both of Phoenix, Arizona. Although Nancy and Winn had no children or grandchildren, they took great delight in their nine nieces and nephews and 23 grand-nieces and grand-nephews, many of whom made annual summer visits to their Colorado home.
Above all, Nancy was a woman of strong faith in God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. She is now in eternal happiness with God in Heaven.
In lieu of a formal funeral service, there will be several celebrations of Nancy’s life with family members in various locations across the country. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Colorado Federation of Garden Clubs c/o Margie Soileau, 8555 Freemantle Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80920 in honor of Nancy.
