February 25, 1950 – September 12, 2015
Ray was born in Sacramento, California. He passed away at Duke Medical Center in North Carolina at 65 years of age surrounded by his wife and children.
Ray was the youngest of three children born to his parents Harold and Wilda (Billie) Freeman. The son of a military officer, Ray enjoyed living in many different places throughout his childhood. He graduated from the University of Arkansas and served on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ for seven years before beginning his 35 year career with The Tom James Company, a custom clothier. He retired in 2015.
Ray and his wife, Paula, met in college. They married in Topeka, Kansas on June 2, 1973.
Ray will be remembered for his faith in Christ, love for family, personal integrity, his desire to love his wife as Christ loved the church, and his legacy of helping to build his children into leaders. Ray was “the rock” of his family; a man of quiet strength, sense of humor, and a calming spirit. His children treasure memories of birthday breakfasts with their dad, fishing and camping trips, knowing he would be there at their school and athletic events, and that he was always ready for a game of chess or scrabble with them.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Paula and their seven children: Chad (Melissa), Brooke (Erik) Dienberg, Nick (Jenn), Tyler (Holly), Hope, Sarah (Chris) Preston, and Abigail; eight grandchildren: Kelly Ray, Lauren, Paige, Emery, Corbin, Landon, Eva, and Jada; a new grandson is due in January: brother Larry (Lynne) Freeman and his sister Joanne (David) Nelson.
A Celebration of Life service will be held for Ray on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 10:00 AM at Creekside Bible Church, 2180 I-25, Castle Rock. Olinger Andrews Caldwell Gibson funeral home in Castle Rock is assisting the family.
