Shelly was born on August 20, 1961, in Newton, Iowa, to Mary Ann and Eugene “Gene” Schermerhorn. She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School and went on to build a life defined by creativity, resilience, and deep love for her family and friends.
She married David W. Daiker in 1981 and later married Robert C. Fitzgerald in 1992.
Shelly was incredibly crafty and fearless when it came to learning something new. There wasn’t a tool she couldn’t use, whether it was a paintbrush, sewing needle, power drill, or saw. She found joy in creating, fixing, and building, and took pride in mastering new skills. She had a passion for gardening, loved country music, and above all else, cherished her role as “Nana.” Being with her grandchildren brought her immense happiness and purpose.
Throughout her life, Shelly worked in many roles, including office manager at a veterinarian’s office, certified nursing assistant, phlebotomist, and in various painting and construction jobs. No matter the position, she brought dedication, curiosity, and a strong work ethic.
Shelly is survived by her children, Jessica Binns (Steven) and Nicholas Daiker (Jarleeya); her adopted nephew Joe Wozniak (Carly); her beloved grandchildren Weston and Annaliya; her siblings Timothy (Darla) Schermerhorn, Mark (Lindsey) Porter, and Robert “Bobby” Jackson Jr.; and her mother, Mary Ann (Clayton) Newell. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Carrie and Roy “Shorty” Schermerhorn and Wilma and Delos “Bill” Middleton; her father, Eugene Schermerhorn; her husband, Robert C. Fitzgerald; and her siblings Sindy Brooks, Jerome “Jay” Jackson, Jerald “Deuce” Porter II, and Michelle Jackson.
While our hearts ache in her absence, we are grateful for the years, love, and memories we shared.
A celebration of Shelly’s life will be held at a later date.
