Tom grew up in Manhattan, NY, where he attended primary school and graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic High School. In 1976, he received a PhD in English Literature from University of Rhode Island. Tom taught English at Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University and the Virginia Beach Public school system. He excelled as a teacher and was loved by his students.
Tom met Esther when he was teaching in Wappingers Falls, NY and she was studying nursing. They dated for a year before marrying in 1966 and welcomed their daughter in 1967.
Tom was a devoted husband and loving father. He enjoyed the funny side of life and had a good sense of humor. A lover of the arts, he appreciated all forms of music, visiting art galleries, and enjoying opera with Esther. Tom enjoyed telling stories that entertained and inspired others. He had an easy-going nature and loved all animals, from the smallest beetle to the biggest wild cat. His greatest passion was birding, pursued throughout the USA, Russia, Europe and Mexico. Whether birding with his family, alone, or with other birders, his favorite birding places were remote parts of Alaska. Tom’s life was full and open to the world and its beauty in nature, art and literature.
