

He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Mary Hawkins Hackman; his daughter Ann Hackman and husband Michael Cantrell; his son John Hackman and wife Susan Hackman; his daughter Laura Hackman and husband Mike Schleifer; his grandchildren Caitlin Cantrell, Molly Cantrell, Liza Hackman, Gabe Hackman, Jack Schleifer and Benjamin Schleifer; his nephews Chuck and Dick Hawkins.
Born June 1, 1929 in Jamshedpur, India and raised in Dundalk, MD the son of A. Sidney Hackman and Anne Paterson Hackman, he was predeceased by brother John (Jack) Paterson Hackman. After graduating from Sparrows Point High School in 1946, he attended Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Education. He later went on to earn his Doctor of Education. Jim served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
He spent his career as an educator in Baltimore County, first as a teacher, then as an administrator, and finally retiring as Assistant Superintendent of Baltimore County Schools. After retiring from education, he served on the Board of First Financial Federal Credit Union. He was an avid singer of barbershop music, a founding member and master of ceremonies of the award winning Chorus of the Chesapeake.
Family will receive friends at Sterling Ashton Schwab Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville, Inc., 1630 Edmondson Ave, Catonsville, MD 21228 on Friday, September 20th from 6 to 9pm. Memorial Services will be held at St. George's & St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 2900 Dunleer Rd., Dundalk, MD 21222 on Saturday, September 21st at 1pm. Burial will be private.
