Mary Agnes Hughes

Mary Agnes Hughes (nee Holtman) of Catonsville, Maryland passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at the age of 101. She was born at home on S. Mount St. July 26, 1921 to Henry and Helen Holtman in Baltimore, Maryland where she grew up and remained her entire life. She is predeceased by brother, Edward Holtman and sister Edwina Spittel. She proudly graduated from the Institute of Notre Dame in 1939.

She went on to work for C&P Telephone Company, starting out as a switchboard operator and moving into management before retiring after 40+ years. She was happily married to Harold L Hughes on June 11, 1950 and lovingly cared for him until his passing in 2000. Mary was a lifetime member of the Catonsville Lioness Club and St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church. She was an accomplished seamstress and also loved to bowl duckpins in her spare time. She was known for her love of animals, showering her many pets with abundant affection, especially her latest cat, Miss Kitty.

She is survived by nephews, Gene C. Lance and David Spittel as well as many great and great-great nieces and nephews. She is also predeceased by nieces, Nancy Smedley. Mary's caring and generous nature will be missed by many friends, family and neighbors.

A visitation for Mary will be held Monday, May 8, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Sterling-Ashton-Schwab-Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville, Inc., 1630 Edmondson Ave, Catonsville, MD 21228. A visitation will occur Monday, May 8, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, 1630 Edmondson Ave, Catonsville, MD 21228. A Funeral Mass will occur Tuesday, May 9, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 30 Melvin Ave, Catonsville, MD 21228. A committal service will occur Tuesday, May 9, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 11:15 AM at New Cathedral Cemetery, 4300 Old Frederick Rd., Baltimore, MD 21229.
