Richard, age 92, died on September 17th, 2021 in Pompano Beach, Florida. Born in Baltimore, MD on August 7, 1929, he was the son of the late Anna nee Rauh and Harry C. Mueller Sr. and brother of the late Harry C. Mueller Jr. Richard attended Baltimore Polytechnic Institute from 1944 to 1946. He then served in the US Army, during the occupation of Korea, from 1946 to 1948. Returning to Baltimore Poly in 1948, he graduated in 1949. He began in the Engineering Program at Johns Hopkins University in the fall of 1949 and completed freshman year. In 1950, he began his work career at Glen L. Martin Co.
In 1951, Richard married the former Marilyn Rohrs and together raised six children. Also in 1951, he returned to JHU, attending their evening college program, eventually graduating with a BS in Engineering in 1960. His professional career included 10 years with Henry Adams, Inc. Consulting Engineers, Baltimore; then four years with two engineering firms in Washington DC; one year with the State of Maryland; and, 25 years with Mueller Associates Consulting Engineers in Baltimore. After retiring to the eastern shore of MD, he performed engineering services for Worcester and Somerset County school systems for ten years. He was at one time a licensed engineer in eleven states and DC. He was a life member of both ASHRAE, where he served as Baltimore Chapter President from 1979 - 1980, and the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers.
Richard was an active member at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Baltimore for 46 years, St. Peter’s LC, Ocean City, 15 years, and Bethany LC, Salisbury, eight years. He served in a variety of positions, many involved building additions and also in teaching Sunday school and bible classes. He was a competitive swimmer throughout his life, including teams at Meadowbrook Swim Club and Baltimore Poly HS, and later with the Maryland Masters and the Ocean Pines “Senior Sharks.” In his later years, Richard moved permanently to Pompano Beach, Florida, after “snowbirding” for many years between Maryland and Florida. In Pompano Beach, he was a member and often frequented his local American Legion; he enjoyed many meals with friends and relatives at the Sea Watch--his favorite ocean front restaurant; and, he was a faithful member at Shepherd of the Coast LC, Ft. Lauderdale.
He is survived by his fiancé and companion of over 15 years, Nancy Hanna of Wilmington, DE, as well as his three former wives, including Margaret (Meg) Etzler of Bishopvile, MD, with whom he raised two more children. Additionally he is survived by seven of his eight children, seven of eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Children (and their spouses) include Richard (Rick) P. Mueller Jr. of Madison NH, LeeAnn Morin of Catonsville, MD (now Beverly Hills, FL), David of Roanoke VA, Paul (and wife Jeannine) of Sykesville, MD, Carol (and Sean Garvey) of Christiansburg, VA, John of Olympia, WA and Peter of Bishopville, MD. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Maria of New Orleans, LA. Grandchildren (and their partners) include Matthew, Sarah, and Julia Morin; Paul Mueller, Jr. (and wife Jackie); Rachel (and her husband Matt McMahon), Johanna Garvey (and her fiance Lance Duncan); and Kara Garvey (and her fiancé, Matthew Fleischer). He was preceded in death by his grandson, Brian Garvey. Great-grandchildren include Nathaniel Colon; Eli and Ella Mueller; Lucy, Colin, and Maddie McMahon; and Emma Duncan.
Funeral arrangements will be provided by Sterling-Ashton-Schwab-Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville, Inc. This includes viewing times on Sunday, October 3, from 1-3 and 4-6pm. 1630 Edmondson Ave. Catonsville MD 21228. A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 4, at 11 am, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 929 Ingleside Ave, Catonsville, MD. After the memorial service, interment will be at Lorraine Park Cemetery in Woodlawn.
