I drove Vera to her hair appointments for years, and we became good friends.  She was a very remarkable woman who lived a very remarkable life!  I will miss her wit and wisdom, but mostly her basic goodness.

We adored, Vera! She was a very dear friend to us for many years . She made every visit with her memorable and special. She was always brilliant , insightful and compassionate . 
      We loved our lunches and dinners with both her and Gabe over the years. What an incredible loss that she is no longer here to be a bright light in this world!
      She was always so considerate and concerned for everyone around her. She had a huge heart and the most wonderful laugh I have ever heard. She was a joy to be around and her keen wit and intellect delighted us to the very end. She is irreplaceable and we will miss her beyond words can express.

We were truly fortunate to be neighbors with Dr. Vera (as our boys called her). She was an incredibly kind, intelligent and thoughtful person. Conversations with her were full of lively discussion, wit and insight as she was on top of everything—whether it was current issues, cultural & world events or the most recent book my 9 year old read—she never missed a detail. She was always delightful company and a wonderful friend to our family.  We will miss her dearly.

I met Vera in 1990 at an interview panel being interviewed for her senior registrar job. Her reputation as a fierce boss was well known and I was not sure whether to celebrate my appointment. However once I started my fears were allayed. She was indeed ‘fierce’ but also fair. 
For  junior doctors/residents training with Vera could be a unique educational experience, if not always a comfortable one. She had the capacity to see straight to the core of a problem and was often direct in conveying that - both with junior doctors and colleagues. Vera could be doughty in defending her department against unwarranted criticism. It’s perhaps difficult to imagine now that being a sole consultant running a major Emergency Department more than 40 years ago must have required considerable resilience and toughness. At the same time Vera was a leader in her vision of the scope of practice for Emergency Medicine doctors, with more senior doctors having admitting rights during daytime hours and leading a multidisciplinary short stay ward attached to the ED.
I learnt more from her than anyone else in my career for which I will always be grateful.
It is, of course, sad to say goodbye but I am glad she was able to enjoy a long and well deserved retirement.
I remain proud to have taken over as her successor at Whipps Cross Hospital which was amongst the best in London when she left.
May she Rest in Peace.

I drove Ms Vera for her hair appointments  many times over the years.  She was a lovely  lady and I truly  enjoyed  the time we spent  together.  She was so bright and had a sharp wit!
