Alice Kay was born on October 11, 1942, the first daughter of Catherine and Howard Nuttall of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. The Nuttall family moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1944. Her sister Mary Lou Nuttall was born in 1946 and they have a brother born in 1941 in Chippewa Falls who died at birth. Alice attended and graduated from Cheyenne Senior High in 1960. There she met her high school sweetheart, Terry Lewis. In 1961, she and Terry married, and they spent their early years in Laramie, Wyoming where Terry was attending the University of Wyoming. While in Laramie, Alice and Terry welcomed three sons to their lives: twins Keith and Eric, and Scott. After graduation, the family moved to Massachusetts and then to Michigan. Alice and Terry divorced in 1967. Alice and sons returned to Cheyenne in 1969 to be closer to Alice’s parents.
Alice raised three active young boys working full-time as a legal secretary, eventually working for Wyoming State Justice Kerr. After her boys graduated from Central High School in Cheyenne, Alice became an avid quilter and well-known local artist. Attending many oil and pastel painting classes at LCC in Cheyenne, her talent developed quickly, and she began selling artwork at nearby art fairs. One of her quilts, containing all the signatures of Governors of Wyoming, was displayed for many years in the Wyoming state capital building. She was asked to paint a large Cowboy boot with a design like the quilt, that is still on display outside the Train Station building in Cheyenne.
Around this time, Alice received Christ as her Savior, and was transformed, developing a love for Jesus and the Bible. She studied hard and graduated with a certificate in Biblical studies. Burdened to share the Gospel on the mission field, Alice traveled to many foreign countries including Russia, Mexico, Columbia, Guatemala, and her beloved Peru, to share the gospel message. In Peru, she partnered with a local pastor to start a sewing school for the local woman, and a feeding station for the poor. Determined to share the gospel, she learned Spanish at the age of 50+. Alice hiked through the jungles of Peru, to preach the gospel of Christ to all who would come to hear her.
In July of 2006, Alice and Terry Lewis remarried and moved to Highlands Ranch, CO. Together they traveled to Peru to share the message of Christ. Alice continued to oil paint and create pastel works. She loved the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Wyoming, and they became the frequent subjects of her artwork.
Always a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Alice encouraged and admonished her sons, daughters in law and grandchildren whenever possible. Her prayers will be missed by all.
Alice was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2012 and gradually the disease affected her ability to paint and travel, but she never stopped loving the Bible or speaking of Jesus.
Her last days were spent at Highline Place, an Anthem memory care facility, surrounded by loving, caring staff. She passed from this life into the arms of her Savior, with her son Eric holding her hand.
Alice is survived by her husband Terry Lewis, her sister Mary Lou Nuttall, her sons, and their families: Keith Lewis and children: Adam and Danielle; Eric and Mary Lynn Lewis and daughter Catherine; Dr. Scott and Tonya Lewis and children: Elizabeth, Timothy, Rose, Andrew (Marissa), Oliver and Olivia Lewis: and grandchildren Arianna Gleeson (Rose), Grayson and Isla Lewis (Elisabeth), Amira and Anissa Lewis (Andrew). And stepson, Michael Reed and his wife Kelly and their children Ella and Lilly.
