Leota’s life was one of strength, creativity, faith, and enduring love. Raised in an orphanage, she learned early how to build family from the heart, forming lifelong bonds with the “brothers and sisters” who became her chosen family. Those early experiences shaped her deep compassion and her lifelong commitment to caring for others.
On November 8, 1943, Leota married Donald Perry Stoutenger in Englewood, Colorado, just weeks before Donald left to serve in the military during World War II. Their marriage was grounded in devotion and perseverance. Together, they raised four children: Donald, Diana, Robert (who preceded her in death in 2018), and Cheryl. Leota and Donald built their family home together, a place filled with love and memories, where Leota continued to reside until Donald’s passing in 1992.
Leota had a lifelong passion for art, especially China painting. She once wrote:
“I started painting in 1970 with Irene Becker. I enjoy painting everything from wildlife to portraits, winning many ribbons. I have taught at clubs, my daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I belong to Panorama and Mile High. I'm still painting but have slowed down as I am 91 years old.”
Her talent, patience, and joy in teaching were gifts she generously shared across generations.
She was an active member of many clubs, including a China Painting Club, the Precious Moments Club, and the Red Hat Club. Leota also loved spending time playing mahjong and bingo, enjoying the fellowship and laughter that came with each game.
Above all, Leota was a devout Christian, guided by her faith throughout her life. She was a beloved grandma, great-grandma, and great-great-grandma, roles she treasured deeply. Leota often said she was going to live to be 100, a testament to her spirited outlook on life.
Leota will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her creative soul, her love of family, and her ability to build beauty and connection wherever she went. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched and the generations she inspired.
