Bert was born in Denver, Colorado on July 31, 1944 in Presbyterian Hospital. He grew up in Denver (except for a five-year period when his family lived in Tacoma, Washington.) He graduated from South High School and received an associates degree in drafting. He served 4 years in the Army from January 1966 to January 1970. Three years were spent in Germany and the other year in various bases in the United States. He had many hobbies including fishing (his great passion in life,) bowling, card playing, and golf. He was brought up in a family where if you caught a fish you were expected to eat it no matter the type or boniness. His "Heaven on Earth" was a privately owned land (his mother worked for the landowners) called "Wagon Wheel Gap" around Creede, Colorado. This property had three lakes and a stream. One of the lakes was a hatchery and you had to catch and release in that lake. He had hard time with the catch and release in that lake and streams in Colorado.
