Bruce Relyea Knight, age 88, of Littleton CO, surrounded by his family passed away peacefully at his home following an extended illness on July 14, 2017. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great- grandfather. Bruce was born to Elwin & Velva Knight in Pocatello, Idaho on July 4th 1929. Being a July 4th baby he was always a firecracker when he was young. Bruce and his lovely wife, Joyce Gleed, were married for 67 ½ years. They raised three wonderful sons, Noel Bruce, Neil Elwin, and Ned Guy. Bruce raised them to respect people, work hard, and to love their spouses through the example of how he loved his wife.
Bruce worked for the Forest Service during and after High School fighting fires. He then went to work for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company, which later became Mountain Bell and then U S West. During his almost 40 year career, he held numerous jobs that required many moves for his young family. He started as a Telephone lineman in Pocatello, ID. Some of the other jobs he held were: Exchange Manager in Hailey & Preston, ID; Miscellaneous Unit Manager in Boise, ID; Unit Manager in El Paso, TX; General Office Commercial Manager in Denver, Co; District Manager in Salt Lake City, UT; until he retired as a Regional Director – State Regulatory Activities in Denver, CO.
Once Bruce retired, he and mom continued to explore the great USA in their trailer. They went to all 50 states. They would go for months at a time and always had great stories to tell and pictures to show their family. Bruce had a rule never to go over 55 MPH when towing his trailer. He had so many “kind” gestures from other drivers that he had painted “Have a Nice Day” on the back of his truck. Bruce and Joyce had a great time wintering in Casa Grande, Arizona with several dear friends for many years. Bruce loved to go hunting and fishing with his family, and enjoyed watching his boys play sports. He also “tried” to play golf.
Dad and mom always loved to dance and would show their kids how to do the Jitter-Bug. They could really “cut-a-rug”. Dad also played the clarinet in High School and taught himself how to play the piano later in life. He always enjoyed playing the piano for the family on Christmas Eve, as they sang his favorite carols.
He is survived by his wife Joyce and his sister Jackie (Knight) Alderman, and sons Noel (Elizabeth), Neil (Tammy), Ned (Debbie), 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Elwin Mayne Knight and Velva Mae (Relyea) Knight.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 22, 2017, 1:00pm viewing followed by 2:00pm funeral at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary in Centennial, CO. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank all the wonderful nurses and workers at the Intermountain Cancer Center, Porter Hospice and all the home care specialists at All the Comforts of Home for their loving and tender care.
