Carey began his first job at twelve years of age at a service station, where he developed a life-long love of classic cars. His real passion however was preaching and pastoring. He felt called and began preaching at the age of fifteen and was pastoring his first church at the age of sixteen.
He married Doris Lambeth on September 4, 1948 and went to a special academy to advance in school so they could attend college and seminary together. His partner in love and ministry for seventy-three years, Doris and Carey attended Southwest Baptist College for two years and graduated from Howard Paine University before both earning a graduate degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Carey was never without a church to pastor from the age of 16 until he went into full-time evangelism almost thirty-three years later. He pastored churches in Missouri, Texas, Alabama, Colorado, and Florida and then preached revivals and crusades in churches across America and internationally for an additional three decades. In later years, when a stroke kept him from traveling, he continued preaching every Sunday at their home church in Miami, FL on Sunday nights and to numerous Celebrate Recovery groups.
After Doris preceded him to glory on September 8, 2020, he moved to Sunrise Assisted Living Center in Colorado Springs, CO, where he became known as “Pastor Carey” to everyone and continued preaching every Sunday while others as far as the Philippines watched via videoconference. He never stopped preaching and leading people to Jesus, and there are thousands of people who came to faith in Christ through his ministry that spanned nearly eight decades.
He fought the good fight, and finished his race and kept the faith until he went to receive the crown of Christ’s righteousness.
Carey is survived by his three children, Craig Miller, Carla Miller, Keith Miller and his wife Sherry. He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Mariah Miller, Micah Miller and his wife Megan, and one brother, David Miller.
A memorial service is pending at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary in June in Denver, CO.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.olingerchapelhill.com for the Miller family.
