A remarkable man of outstanding character, Dayton was born March 10, 1930, the eldest son of three children to Dayton and LaNore Scherer in Grand Forks North Dakota. He graduated from high school in 1948, joined the Navy in 1950, and attended the University of North Dakota for two years as part of the ROTC training.
Mr. Scherer married Vaughn Carol Rust on June 7, 1953, and they had three children: Deborah Susan, April 5, 1954; Mark Dayton, May 6, 1955 and David Paul, October 29, 1956. He is the brother of Betty Twietmeyer, and the cherished grandfather of eight grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Dayton was a devoted Christian who took his faith very seriously and passed that faith on to his children and grandchildren. In the early years, he was a paint contractor, piano tuner and refinisher, and was in high demand as a furniture touchup artist. He attended and graduated from the Sales Training Institute at PPG Industries, and he began working and winning many sales awards.
His hobbies included lettering and studying history. He loved traveling across the United States in his motor home, seeing a number of historical sites. One of the many highlights of his time on earth was the formation of a bagpipe band called the Black Watch of Colorado. He enjoyed playing the pipes, taking part in many parades and winning trophies.
Dayton went to be with the Lord very peacefully in the company of his beloved family and will be missed by friends and family alike. He is buried at Fort Logan National Cemetery where he is in good company.
