Eileen Applegate of Sun Lakes Arizona passed away peacefully on April 18, 2013. She was born in Norton, Kansas on February 3, 1920 to William and Winnie Wyatt and was one of nine children. Eileen was preceded in death by her husband Mervin L. Applegate in 1991. She is survived by a son Gary L. Applegate and wife Sandy of Sun Lakes, AZ; a daughter Marlene K. Hogan and husband Robert of Parker, CO; grandson Curt D. Elliott, wife Tami and their son Brody of Parker, CO; grandson Dan Hogan, wife Sarah and their daughter Cori of Highlands Ranch, CO; grandson Chris Hogan, wife Kristie and their sons Scott and Bobby of Gillette, WY; a brother Melvin D. Wyatt and wife Barbara of Aurora, CO as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Eileen grew up on a farm in Kansas and was married to Mervin in 1939. She and Mervin moved to the Denver area in the early 1940s where they raised their family. They owned and operated dry cleaners for several years. Eileen continued in the dry cleaning business until her retirement. She won awards as a manager that included trips to Arizona and Hawaii.
Eileen was a caretaker for her husband for many years as he suffered from Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease prior to his death. She moved in Sun Lakes, Arizona in the mid 1990s.
Eileen had a bit of gypsy in her and they moved many times over the years, all in the South Denver metropolitan area and also owned several different mountain cabins where the family enjoyed spending time. Later on they enjoyed traveling in RVs and visited the Western states and spent time at lakes in Colorado and Nebraska.
Many good times were had with the extended families of her brothers and sisters. These typically included home-made ice cream or watermelon in the summer or cookouts in the mountains and get togethers on holidays. She enjoyed cooking Sunday dinners for her husband and adult children and their families. She made great pumpkin pie and lemon meringue pie.
Eileen lived as she wanted in her own home right up to her death. She prided herself on being able to do her own housework, washing and ironing and to live independently, even at age 93. She lived a long life and was happy and cheerful till the end. She had many neighborhood friends and enjoyed shopping trips to Walmart with the “ladies”, lunches at Village Inn and trips to the local senior center and always dressed up for the occasion.
She will be missed greatly by her loving family and friends.
