Gary McNee, 80, of Littleton Colorado died on February 14 after a heroic struggle with heart and lung disease. He is survived by his wife Carolyn McNee (married 1962), daughter Jody Jamison (Matt) and granddaughters Payton and Kelsey, daughter Marne Katsanis (John) and granddaughters Madeline and Sawyer, sisters Kara Brockschink (John) and Loralea Francis. He was predeceased by his parents Robert and Mildred McNee and sister Connie Swartzendruber.
Gary was born on October 28,1939 in Cedar Rapids Iowa.
After graduating from Norway High School, he received a BA from Cornell College and a MA in counseling from the University of Iowa.
As an Iowa farm boy, his early years were focused on 4H. He loved showing his cattle, giving presentations, and attending the state fairs. He also loved trapping, baseball, and of course his lifelong passion with cars. After, all he drove a truck and tractor at age 8!
He retired after 30 years as a counselor at Littleton High School. His contributions to his students’ lives will be long remembered. He was especially helpful for students whose interests were in vocational education. He also worked hard to find the proper college for his students and his good relationships with college recruiters and informative recommendations made many successful placements. He remained good friends with some students for over 50 years.
His primary activity was his cars. He loved Vettes and muscle cars but also Chevrolet cars and trucks and Farmall tractors. Restoring them, driving them, reading about them, and in recent years U-tubing them occupied many of his hours. His was truly a “car person”.
Other major activities included his interest in World War II, traveling in the US and abroad- especially his trip to the Normandy Beaches-, his beloved dogs, and family gatherings. He had a great fondness for his grandchildren, enjoying holidays, camping trips, Rocky Mountain National Park, Bandimere Speedway, and many granddaughter sport and school events.
And last of all, he is remembered for his generous and friendly manner with everyone he interacted with. Even at the end he joked and made lasting memories with his medical doctors, nurses, and therapists. One doctor called him the “energizer bunny”. He fought the good fight and has gone to a much deserved rest.
