Herb was born on May 30, 1926 to Frank Augustus and Ruth Katherine Barkow in Atchison Kansas. Herb married the love of his life, Nancy Jean Grove at Saint Benedicts Church in Atchison in 1956 and they remained together until her death on New Year’s Eve in 2012. Herb served his church and civic organizations with passion and dedication and helped many folks throughout his career as a counselor and rehabilitation specialist for federal employees. He served selflessly in downtown soup kitchens to Denver’s neediest.
Herb had a great passion for life and loved spending time with his family and friends and never met a stranger he didn’t get to know, invite home to dinner, a game of tennis, cards or ping pong. He was a passionate skier, canoeist, and hiker.
