Leo Peter Schnell

Leo Peter Schnell, born on March 3, 1939, in Richardton, North Dakota, having used up the last of his nine lives, passed away on December 5, 2023 at the ripe old age of 84 3/4. Four generations of family were blessed to be able to say their goodbyes before Leo went to greet St. Peter and put in a good word for us all.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elizabeth Schnell, his brother Francis, and grandson Jacob. He is survived by his beloved wife Judy, sons Doug (Gretchen) and Darold (Lyn), daughter Diane (Kevin), 8 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Leo and Judy's journey began on May 9, 1960, in Regent, North Dakota, when they joined hands in marriage. On the day of his passing, Leo reminisced fondly about the day he first saw Judy and told a friend, “That’s the one I want!”

Leo's early life was marked by his service in the US Navy, followed by years as a skilled heavy equipment operator in both CA and NV, and finally as the proud owner of F.L. Dye Plumbing and Heating in Bozeman, MT. After 28 years as a small business owner, Leo would retire and settle in Highlands Ranch, CO.

In the '70s, Leo shared a passion for harness racing with his son Doug for Shetland Harness Racing. Leo found joy in collectible cars, country-western/ballroom dancing and following the professional rodeo circuit.

Leo developed a mastery of woodworking, specializing in crafting canes, walking sticks, crosses, and other items out of diamond willow. His creations, owned by many, stand as a testament to his creativity and skill.

Leo will be remembered for many things – bending any friendly ear, willing or not; always being the first in line to eat; being obsessively compulsive about the care of his lawn; his fondness for diet coke and red wine; needing to be at church at least an hour early to get “his” seat; watching the cowboy channel and falling asleep to Fox News. However, those that knew him best will remember him most for his love of his family. May his memory live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
