Mark was born to Donald F. Delano and Maxine S. Delano on March 28, 1950 in Denver, Colorado. Mark graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, where he was part of the school gun club and ROTC. He received his pilot’s license in 1968, before he could even legally drive. Mark graduated with his Master’s Degree in Airframe and Power Plant from MSU and worked for Lockheed Martin for 30 years, retiring as a Senior Quality Engineer. During his time at Lockheed, Mark contributed to the Manned Maneuvering Unit, Defense Systems and many other unknown projects. In his free time, Mark was an accomplished pilot, having built two experimental, private air planes; a Rutan Long-EZ and a Van’s Aircraft RV-6A, once housed at Centennial Airport. Mark also designed and built a steam launch boat and machined many other steam engines. He enjoyed steam trains, and RC boats and planes, as well.
Mark is survived by his wife, Maleah; three children, Andrea (Annie) Delano, Nikki Johnson and Jason Noble; three grandchildren, Sheyan Johnson, Alyssa Johnson and Jericho Noble; one great grandchild Dean Ortega; and his two loving dogs Peanut and Teddy. He also leaves behind cousin Susie Friend and her family, along with other family and friends.
The family is holding a private celebration of life and asks that donations be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association (act.alz.org). Part of Mark’s ashes will be launched into Earth’s orbit in February of 2023.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.olingerchapelhill.com for the Delano family.
