Mattie was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. During the great depression she grew up as the youngest of 3 children amidst wartime hardships and poverty. This shaped her perseverance and grit with hard work as her North Star. She developed her creative gifts and became an expert seamstress, wedding dress maker, hat maker, florist, knitter and was an expert jazz pianist and teacher.
She married Albertus Stephanus (Fanie) Burger, her child-hood sweetheart, in 1953 and they had 3 children. Her first-born son died 3 months after birth from a congenital heart defect and subsequently 2 daughters were born from this union. Evalina Levina Burger (van der Walt) and Wilma Burger (Pretorius). Today she is survived by her 2 daughters, 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Mattie was a dedicated wife and mother and after becoming widowed in1992, she married William Edward Scott, who passed away in 2007. She moved to the USA in 2010 and became a proud citizen of the USA, in 2016.
Mattie bravely endured the late effects of chemotherapy and passed away peacefully in her home in Colorado. She was a dignified lady, who would engage intelligent conversations right up to the end. She hated the dark and left us the night that the July Full Moon was low in the sky, lighting her way to heaven. She knew that the full moon would remind us of her shining light that made this world a better place.
Mattie will be remembered for her grace, loving smile, her love for her family and her pets and for loving life, always living it to the fullest. We will miss you!
Memorial Services will be held 11:00 AM August 29, 2025 at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary 6601 South Colorado Boulevard, Centennial Colorado 80121
