Maxine Deloris Blaine, a beloved mother, grandma, great-grandma, great-great grandma and friend, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025, at the age of 101. Her long and beautiful life was a testament to strength, humor, love, and devotion to family.
Maxine was born on February 10, 1924, in Sterling, Colorado, to Earl and Bessie Zuhlke. An only child, she was raised on a small farm in nearby Willard, where she worked alongside her parents, helping with every aspect of farm life. Though her household was small, she was surrounded by the warmth of a large extended family, which instilled in her the values of hard work and togetherness.
She graduated from Grayland School in a class of just three students and was awarded a scholarship to attend beauty school. But always independent and adventurous, Maxine chose a different path—moving to California to live with her aunt and explore life beyond the plains of Colorado.
Upon returning to Sterling, fate introduced her to the love of her life, George D. Blaine. They were married and shared 53 years of marriage filled with devotion, laughter, and dancing. Together, they built a life in Englewood, Colorado, where they raised their two children, Ron and Sandi. Music was always a part of Maxine’s soul—she and George loved to dance to George Strait, and she often said she looked forward to waltzing once more with George in heaven to “The Keeper of the Stars.”
Maxine had an incredible green thumb and a deep love for nature. Her garden was always in bloom, overflowing with flowers and vegetables. She found joy in the Colorado mountains, wildlife, fishing trips, and the peaceful rhythm of life outdoors. Her home was a haven filled with warmth, delicious homemade meals and pies, and the comforting rhythm of her crochet work as she crafted beautiful afghans and doilies for those she loved.
She had a sharp wit and a sparkling sense of humor that stayed with her throughout her life. Whether she was watching her favorite soap, Days of Our Lives (which she followed from its very first episode), enjoying an episode of J.A.G., or diving into a spicy romance novel; Maxine knew how to enjoy life’s pleasures.
Family was always at the heart of Maxine’s world. She leaves behind a legacy of love: her children Ron and Sandi, 7 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren—and one more expected in October. She remained in her Englewood home until the age of 98, surrounded by family, memories, and the spirit of the man she still called her husband. When asked by a chaplain in hospice how long she had been married, Maxine simply smiled and replied, “I am still married.”
Maxine Deloris Blaine lived her 101 years with grace, humor, and an unwavering love for those around her. She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished.
