Michael James Goodwin, a man who lit up every room with his wit, wisdom, and unwavering sense of humor, passed peacefully from this life on September 9, 2025. A beacon of integrity, Michael lived by three simple yet profound rules—truths that shaped his life and continue to guide those he leaves behind:
1. Is it right or wrong?
2. Would society agree or disagree?
3. Are you willing to accept the consequences?
These principles were more than just words; they were the compass by which he steered his life—and ours.
Born on October 21, 1947, in the high mountain town of Monte Vista, Colorado, Michael was the youngest of four boys born to Ralph Goodwin and Vivian Grisier. Known fondly as “the caboose,” he followed in the footsteps of his older brothers Bob, Ralph Jr. ("Bud"), and Ken. At the age of 10, the family relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where his father opened a small neighborhood grocery store. Michael graduated from Manzano High School in 1966, and not long after, answered the call to serve his country.
Enlisting in the United States Navy, Michael served proudly aboard the USS America as a Quartermaster during the Vietnam War. His courage and dedication were honored with a Bronze Star and the National Defense Service Medal. After two years of service, he returned home to pursue a career in the burgeoning world of computer technology, studying at Southwest Tech School.
Michael had a zest for life and a competitive streak that found its outlet first in softball, and later on the golf course. He especially looked forward to the annual family reunions in Las Vegas, where the tradition of the Goodwin family golf tournament brought together generations in friendly rivalry and warm camaraderie.
Above all else, Michael was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather. He was the kind of man who listened deeply and always had a quick joke ready to lighten the mood. His wisdom, laughter, and deep sense of justice will remain etched in the hearts of all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Tammy Goodwin. He is survived by his adored wife, Penny Turpin; his children: Tracy MacNaughton, Kyle Sullivan, Scott Goodwin, and Lindsey Underwood. He also leaves behind seven adoring grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a legacy of love, strength, and character that will echo for generations.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 4th at 2:00 PM at Olinger Chapel Hill. All are welcome to join in remembering and honoring the extraordinary life of Michael Goodwin. A reception will be held following so we can share memories and relish in Mike’s journey.
