Born in Denver in 1941, Mike lived his entire life in the Denver metro area. He attended Denver’s South High School and served four years in the United States Marine Corps after high school. While in the Marines, Mike fell in love with a sweet young lady named Sharon. Mike and Sharon were married on August 16, 1962.
Mike and Sharon raised three great children; Tamara, Michael, and Matthew. Mike and Sharon’s two oldest children also attended South High School. Tamara even had some of the same teachers that Big Mike had endured.
Returning to Denver after his service in the Marines, Big Mike worked as an automotive mechanic and owned his own Enco gas station for a short time. After the gas station, Big Mike went on to work for Western Electric installing telephone systems in commercial buildings. From there, he went to work for Reliance Electric as a small motor mechanic and machinist. Reliance went through a few changes during the years he was employed and he retired from Rockwell Automation after 23 years of service.
Outside of work, Mike enjoyed being with his family for card games, birthday parties and his children’s sporting events. He also enjoyed singing with a barbershop quartet, working on cars, volunteering with the Boy Scouts and he was always a dog lover. In addition to all that, he managed to get in a bit of fishing and golf and the occasional family road trip in their van. It was the 1970s after all. He had to own a van. And in Big Mike’s case, it had to be a Ford van. Big Mike was a firm believer in the big three US automakers; Ford, Ford and Ford!
After retiring, Big Mike took fishing to another level for many years on his beloved pontoon boat. He would take anyone fishing that wanted to spend a day with him. When he wasn’t on the boat, he would build birdhouses, play cards and feed his video game addiction on his iPad!
Big Mike is survived by his wonderful wife Sharon, children Tamara (David), Michael (Natalie) and Matthew (Nikki), and ten grandchildren; Liz, Shae, Mason, Maddox, Cooper, Charlotte, Stevie, Isaiah and Jeramiah.
Both of Mike’s parents, Fred and Mary Schreiber, preceded Mike.
