Ray, beloved friend, family member, pet dad and cherished member of the community, left behind a legacy of kindness, warmth, and integrity. Ray touched the lives of many throughout his journey, always ready to lend a helping hand, share a heartfelt laugh, rescue an animal, or offer a well-placed joke when it was needed most.
Ray was born and raised on a farm to a loving family, where he learned the values of compassion and hard work. From a young age, Ray displayed a love for animals and a curiosity for life. He went into the Army and served during peacetime. He met and was married to his beautiful wife Alice Schmier (Colm) for 60 years. They had 3 sons and one beloved grandchild Zachary Schmier.
Ray’s last 6 years were spent with his fiancé Dawn, his guard dog Samson, and his guard cat Pretty Girl, who was by his side and never left it when he was dying.
Throughout his career at Martin Marietta, Ray was known for his dedication and professionalism. He was with the same company for 44.5 years. He approached every role with integrity and a commitment to excellence, earning the respect of colleagues and clients alike. Ray’s work ethic and positive attitude made him a role model in his field and a trusted friend to many. When he retired, he brought the most enjoyable part of his job with him, the feral cats he fed. They came home with him to the beautiful garage he built for them.
Ray’s impact extended far beyond his professional life. Ray always sought to make the world a better place through his rescue of animals. He started with cats but expanded out to the birds, bunnies, and squirrels. The last 6 years of his life he had 4 dogs he rescued, who adored him beyond belief. They had the ability to say goodbye to him in the end.
Ray spent his last years being spontaneous. Jumping on planes, last minute, to travel with Dawn and her friends to places like Maui and North Carolina. Going to the Meghan Trainor concert to watch his favorite singer play “I Made You Look” and dance on stage from 2nd row seats. Rescuing his beloved German Shepard from Arkansas. To the very last adventure of going to St. Nicks and dinner at The Melting Pot less than 2 weeks before he passed away.
Ray will be remembered for his humor, generosity, and unapologetic childlike attitude. His laughter brightened every room, and his compassion inspired those around him. Ray’s memory lives in the hearts of all who knew him, and his legacy of kindness will continue to remind us to be like him.
Ray is survived by his loving fiancé, his grandson, devoted friends, and a community that will forever cherish his memory.
A celebration of Ray’s life will be held on January 8, 2025. Details on this site follow.
Rest in peace, my love. You will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
