Dear Grandpa Godwin - 
I wanted to thank you for welcoming me into your family and including me as a grandkid since I was eight years old. I have good memories of spending time at the house with you and Gertie that include lots of food, laughs, and you in your chair with your dogs right next to you.  I respect your love of and dedicated service to our country.  You are very missed, but I hope that you are resting peacefully now.

Dear Grandpa,
I miss you...I miss you more then I thought grown people could miss someone.  I know you were ready to go, but I wish I could still call you or see you....that's the hardest.
Your quite, strong and loving presence was one of the best things about going to see you and Gertie as a kid.  It didn't change much when I became an adult.  I love that you loved your family so strongly as well as your country and your dogs.  I immensly appreciate your trust in giving me Duke once your chapter with him closed and you no longer could (but most certainly wanted too) take care of him as you'd wanted too.
I miss you every day , I think of you every day.  I've been giving Duke so much attention he walks away from me....he needs a break, but I feel closest to you when my arms are around him.  I promise to take the best care of him until he meets you again.

It has been our pleasure to be Robert and Maria’s “pesky” neighbors for over 30 years.  We are thankful we grew to be such close friends and became known as the “kids across the street”.  

Whenever you took a trip, you entrusted us with the care of your home and most beloved four legged family members; the Shebas, Magic and Duke.  This was certainly an honor.  We thank you for reciprocating and in turn looking after our home and critters – including the bird we caught together in your garage.  

Eventually you also entrusted us to provide care to you and Maria and handle things as needed without too much argument.  We always wanted to do more for you and are thankful you finally began to rely upon us more over time to make things easier for you when you weren’t able to do as much.  

We find ourselves missing so much without our folks across the street to tend to and look after every day.  We miss Robert dearly but know he is in a better place and no longer in pain or unhappy.  

Maria – may you find comfort in your memories of a long life together with Robert.  You know where to find us if you need anything!

The Kids Across the Street


It's hard to put into words how much you are missed. A tender heart with a quiet force to be reckoned with, you gave a sense of safety and comfort to everyone you loved. I knew an 'I love you, Nicky' from Grandpa really meant something. A hug, a smile, a laugh, all special and sacred. Walking through your front door, the sweet smell of your pipe tobacco was like coming home. Being at Grandpa and Gertie's house meant family was together. I miss you. I will cherish our little moments for the rest of my life. Love you, Grandpa.

Rob, I just wanted to thank you for being a incredible father-in-law... even though I disappointed you by being a "college graduate". Hopefully, I can share my thoughts as articulate as a military man would. 
I enjoyed when I could get you talking and telling me about things in your life. For example, being the catcher on your high school baseball team and when a family "adopted you" while on duty in the Philippines, and taking a boat across the bay for dinner.  It was so cool to hear about your assignment while stationed at a secret base in Las Vegas. I even appreciated our trips the the Emergency Room once a week, even though you kept apologizing! I was only trying to show you my appreciation for all the things you had done for us.  

I'll miss our walks with Dukey-Duke, but I'm sure by now, you have found another dog in Heaven and you're probably walking him right now! You'll be missed, Love, Dennis

Dear Maria and Family, 
We're neighbors to you. In the years since 1994, living on the opposite corners, we regret getting to have known you better. Privileged to have met you before the past few years, but never really got to know you as well as we'd wished. Thankfully and very grateful we did get to know you through the first few challenging months of covid. Sad to think these times brought us closer. Even though we hadn't known each other long, you felt like family in many ways. All your sweet conversations Maria, I'll cherish. You are a special lady. You can always call if you need to talk. Robert was a good man. We'll remember all the many times he'd cross the street to go over to visit with his best buddy Mike and Karma. He was so good in walking his dog as well. He'll be missed by many, especially Mike and Karma and all his family. May his soul rest in peace and may God have Mercy him and mercy on us all. Peace to you.

I know that when you left us it was because you knew the time was right, and you were satisfied that you had completed the task God had given you and were pleased with what you accomplished.

Rest easy, Daddy.  We’ll take it from here.

Grandpa Godwin, you are truly missed! Not just in passing but also over the past year, not being able to visit regularly, as we always had, after the world was turned on its head. Despite his hard exoskeleton and assertive opinions, Grandpa opened his heart to those who were true and genuine. Grandpa loved his family first and foremost and there was a lot to love!! Wife, dogs, kids, grandkids and great-grand kids. I am fortunate that I was able to have a close relationship with him, and my kids did as well. We shared woodworking as a hobby along with outdoorsman activities. My oldest son Grayson was able to bring him so much joy and memories playing his Trumpet for him. My husband Matthew could always get him to crack smile and engage in good conversations. My youngest son Rylee was a fire ball of energy that he always seemed to tolerate more so than others :) We miss you Grandpa Rob and wish we had more time to spend with you towards the end of life, but we are extremely fortunate for the quality time we did have for so many years. I will always hold those memories deep in my heart. I am happy that you can now breathe easy. Love you so much Gertie and Grandpa, more than words can express!!!

Thank you for being the man that you were. I appreciate your words of encouragement and guidance. I will forever cherish the stories you shared with me and keep them close to my heart always.

Rob was a good man and friend. I first met him when his son married my daughter. We did not see each other often, but he always welcomed me and Bill. I will miss him.

A better Father in Law could never be had. I loved you so much and thoroughly enjoyed the times that I spent with you. I'm so glad to have known you and called you 'daddy'. I'll see you some day. Say hi to my dad for me. 

Dad, when I was growing up you seemed larger than life. I remember always looking up to you.  I tried to emulate your honesty, integrity and loyalty. You are my Hero, and I love you more than you can know. I miss you so much, and I hope I made you proud.

I know I was your favorite even though you told Ma she was number one.  I'll keep our secret safe.  Love you, miss you, can't wait to see you in many moons....I'll be expecting real treats, this Holly chick spoiled me with biscuits, so put those in your pocket instead of the kibble.

Although you were a quiet, tough man. You always welcomed me with the warmest hugs.  I will miss the excitement you had when we came over, and the grumbles you made when the house got to loud.. You will always hold a special spot in our hearts.

Grandpa, you didn't mince words, and you didn't always have much to say.  You did however make it clear how much you loved your family, and the feeling is very much reciprocated.  I feel lucky to have had the time I did with you.  As the years moved faster, we were blessed to have the opportunity to grow closer, even though the miles were far apart.  We love and respect everything you have done for us, Gertie and your country.  You will be sorely missed, and I will take with me the lessons you gave and the memories you shared.  Thank you for being you, I wouldn't have changed that for the world.  I love and miss you.  - Lesley

Papa Bob,
Although I didn’t get to see you much, my childhood memories are full of times with you and Gerdie, and I hold them close to my heart. I remember how full of love you were at any given moment, and the stories you told were like no other. You lived such a full and wonderful life, and you were a ray of light in dark times. I will remember you for the rest of my life, and I hope to live a life half as fulfilled as you. I miss you every day, but I know you’re in a better and happier place.

You were the epitome of love, strength and country.  I am so honored to have been able to call you Daddy.  You and momma raised four beautiful children that would not be where they are today if not for your grit and guidance.  I miss you so very much.  You leave me with such happy memories of growing up, whether it was camping, fishing, or moving to the next assignment.  Thank you for the life you gave me as I wouldn't change it for anything in the world.

I saw you at least once a year. I knew you for your love of yelling at the Broncos, slippers, and your dogs. You were always tough and quiet which intimidated me. However I saw how much you loved those around you. It was endless, patient, and kind and you had taught me a lot, even though I didn’t know it at the time. The entire family hurts and misses you but God knows you’re brushing your dogs up there. I’ll always strive to love as great as you did. Love you Papa Bob 

You were always there for all of your children, no matter what we threw at you! Wise and steady, we knew we could depend on you for help, advice, love and a wise crack. Growing up, you were the wisest and smartest man we knew, and as time went on we discovered that you "did good" in raising us. You will be sorely missed, but we rejoice in having the honor of being your children.
