

Major Steven Michael Katapski, USAF (Ret.), passed away on April 25, 2026, at the age of 66. A proud graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, Steve embodied the values of Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do throughout his life and career.
Born on November 18, 1959, to Stan and Pat Katapski, Steve’s commitment to service began early and carried him through a distinguished Air Force career. As a commissioned officer and later a Major, he was known for his steady leadership, technical expertise, and unwavering dedication to the men and women he served alongside. His professionalism and character left a lasting impact on every unit he touched.
Following his military service, Steve continued to lead with humility and purpose, always placing family at the center of his life. He was deeply proud of his children, Ryan and Lindsey, and derived profound joy in his role as Grandpa to Tyler, Thomas, Maisie, and Ruby.
Steve is survived by his siblings Judi Barbara (Paul), Laurie Katapski (Mark), Tom Katapski (Ann), and Cathy Deck (Richard); his children Ryan Katapski (Courtney) and Lindsey Washington (Peter); and his grandchildren. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stan and Pat Katapski, his brother Craig, and his nephew Nicholas Barbara.
Major Katapski will be laid to rest with full military honors at the United States Air Force Academy Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colorado — a fitting tribute to a life defined by service, duty, and devotion to family.
His legacy endures in the Service he sacrificed for, the family he cherished, and the values he lived every day.
Funeral Mass will be at The Air Force Academy Community Center Chapel 5134 Cathedral Dr. USAF Academy, CO 80840. Enter through the North or South Gate.
