Donald M. Boucher, age 81, died peacefully at home in Ivoryton, CT on February 28, 2025, after a year-long struggle against a rare form of cancer. He was holding the hand of his beloved wife of 58 years, Moira Boucher. He leaves behind two other great loves: his daughter Correne Boucher, MD and granddaughter Katherine (Katie) Boucher, both of Higganum, CT. The son of Marty and Edith Boucher, Don matriculated at UCONN Stamford. In the midst of college, he spent a year crewing on a yacht in the Bahamas. He was working and finishing college when he met a beautiful, hard-working Scottish lass named Moira (Mori). Don and Mori married in October 1966 and were the couple that all aspire to be…the best of friends, and even more in love than ever after 58 years. In 1974, Don, Mori, and Correne moved to Vermont. It had always been Don’s dream after years of visiting his family in Pownal and Bennington. There, they truly lived the good life, managing to balance hard work and responsibility with a special knack for always finding joy in life. A genuinely hospitable man, Don enjoyed cooking and sharing meals, often with a fine Cabernet and veggies from his gardens. He also loved to be outdoors. Whether hunting for deer or turkey, golfing, or gardening, “success” was less important to Don than a day spent outside, on his own or with his brother Peter or other family and friends. Don’s boundless generosity nourished the bodies and souls of countless folks. Don’s career was in transportation and logistics. For many years, this meant driving over 50,000 miles annually, so Don was delighted to spend the last years of his career working at Mack Molding in Arlington – a desk job with a 4-mile commute. And though he liked working, Don loved retirement. Vermonters at heart, Don and Mori came to appreciate the luxury of a few winter months spent in Anna Maria Island, FL, where Don could fish, golf, play cards, walk the beach, and just enjoy time with Mori. Don was a true family man. A devoted son, he took great care of his parents, especially in the last years of their lives in VT. In 2017, Don and Mori made the difficult choice to move to CT to be closer to Correne and Katie. On trips to Scotland, Don enjoyed visits with his beloved mother-in-law, Mae. He also always found time for community service. A fierce advocate for quality education, he served on the Sunderland Board of Education, the BRSU, and as a Trustee at Burr & Buton Academy. An amazing husband, father, grandfather, friend, role model, community member, and all-around decent human being, Don will most of all be remembered for his kindness, compassion, patience, humor, and gentle nature. He leaves behind many loved ones: His wife Mori and daughter Correne; granddaughter Katherine; brother Peter and sister-in-law Debra of Danbury, CT and their children Jonathan, Marc, and Melissa and their significant others and children; brother-in-law Joe Hughes of Cambridge Ontario and nieces and nephews Rhona, Glenn, Stewart and Michelle, also of Ontario, as well as their spouses and children, and countless friends that he considered family as well.
There will be no calling hours. At a later date there will be a celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Don’s memory to Middlesex Health Hospice (middlesexhealth.org).
