Gregory (Greg) Michael Scata, 77, passed away March 25. The cause was a heart attack. He is survived by his best friend and wife Geraldine Bowman, with whom he shared life for almost thirty five years. Born in Hartford, CT to Joseph Scata and Elsie (Cappe) Scata, who predeceased him, he is also survived by his four children, Eric Scata, Tyler Scata, Kathryn Scata and Emily Currie, eight grandchildren, and his brother, Peter Scata, and sister, Karen Aubin. From school, Greg followed in his Dad’s footsteps into the trucking industry and later as an industrial supplier.
In 1999, Greg pursued a lifelong love of boats and the sea when he joined Cross Sound Ferry and Fox Navigation in New London, Connecticut on several different ferries, including high speed. He excelled, attaining the position of Navigator on the high speed ferry Tatobam. He completed courses at the Northeast Maritime Institute in Massachusetts, and received more than a dozen certificates, including Radar Observer. He eventually rose to “Mate of steam or motor vessels of not more than 1600 gross tons on inland waters.”
Greg shared this love of boating and saltwater with friends and family over the many years spent on the Connecticut shoreline. Even after retiring and moving to South Carolina, he was never far from a beach, a boat launch or waterside restaurant. He returned to Connecticut to be in the place he loved most, Old Saybrook. His smile, his playful banter and his easy-going nature will be sorely missed.
