Astrid left her home in Austria and moved to the United States in 1948 to marry her Army sweetheart, Hiram Otero. She met Hiram in 1946 when she was working for the American Allied Forces in Vienna and he was stationed nearby. They married on February 3, 1949. They settled in Bronx County, New York where they lived until purchasing a home on Long Island in Centereach, in 1960, where they raised four children and numerous cats and dogs together.
Astrid was a great lover of nature, both plants and animals. She loved cats and had more than twenty-five cats over her lifetime. Right up to the very end, she continued to have compassion for the neighborhood strays, providing them food and shelter and giving names to each one. She loved gardening and always had pots of flowers decorating the front steps of her home. Her garden was her pride and joy. She also loved bird watching and was the historian of the Great South Bay Audubon Society, contributing articles and poems to their newsletter. She also donated to many animal charities on Long Island, the Ginny Fund being one of her favorites. Astrid’s love for nature overflowed to her love for others. She made friends easily and was generous to family and friends needing a helping hand. She put the needs of everyone and everything before her own.
In addition to her parents, Astrid was predeceased by her husband of forty-nine years, Hiram, and a brother Leo Sauer. Surviving are three sons William Sauer and his wife, Marilyn, of Medford, Michael Otero and his wife, BJ, of Blairsville GA, and Richard Otero of Centereach; daughter Patricia Fuller of Young Harris GA; two grandchildren Jeffrey Neidhart and his wife, Dora, of San Diego CA, Sandra Laidlow and her husband Nigel of Buford GA; two step-grandchildren Cindy McGinnis of Ronkonkoma and James McGinnis, Jr. of Patchogue; six great-grandchildren Alexis Fisk, Nicole Neidhart, Andrew Neidhart, Christopher Laidlow, Olivia Laidlow, and Jordan Laidlow; one brother Thomas Sauer and his wife, Elisabeth, and a niece Elisabeth, of Vienna, Austria; and neighbors Ann Andrews and her husband, Kevin, and their three children Christopher, Amanda, and Justin, who were all more like family to her and they thought of her in the same way.
