Larry Cornelius (Pop-Pop) born in Astoria, New York, passed away on February 18, 2016 in Fort Pierce, Florida, due to complications from a fall, with family by his side. The lord has called him home to be reunited with his loving first wife Mary who passed away in 1988. He was also preceded in death by his devoted 2nd wife Donna; son John; parents Nellie and Frederick; and brothers Fred, Ralph and Bill Cornelius.
Survivors include 5 children: Denise Costigan (Larry), Carol McEnany (Brian), Laura Cornelius, Larry Cornelius (Sue) and Janice Cornelius (Martin Romero). 3 stepchildren : Walt Jordan, Greg Jordan and Gayle Quay. 10 grandchildren: Christopher Costigan (Renee), Sean Costigan ( Marisa), Keith Costigan (Jennifer), Shauna Micallef (Adam), Kaitlin Torriero( Tony )Ryan McEnany, Jennifer Bryant (Eddie) Philip Lombardi, Sheri Comeaux (Will), Amanda Moore (Chris); 21 great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Larry was a WWII Veteran with the US Navy Air Core in Corpus Christ, Texas, where he protected the coast from Corpus Christi to Pensacola, Florida, tracking Navy and enemy submarines. He lived on Long Island for many years, where he was active in the community, having provided the Centereach Fire Department with over 25 years of service including his tenure as both the assistant chief and then chief (1960-1961).
He retired to Florida in 1989 after 42 years with the AfL- CIO local 342, where he was a union delegate.
Larry enjoyed travel, participation in many clubs and various activities during his retirement, but what he enjoyed the most was his family. He loved and was proud of each and every one of them.
Visitation: OB Davis Funeral Home, 2326 Middle Country Road, Centereach, New York 11720, Sunday, February 28, 2016 from 2:00 to 5:00. Burial: Monday, February 29, 2016, Long Island National Cemetery, 2040 Wellwood Avenue, Farmingdale, New York 11735.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the American Cancer Society, as he lost both of his wonderful wives to this disease.
