Please know I am with you in spirit when you raise a glass to Billy's larger than life memory this coming weekend at McCarthys - Richie- your post about Billy's love of golf and art is so touching. I'm sorry for your tremendous loss.

Billy really did have the biggest smile and greatest inner strength I have ever seen, despite all he was going through. He truly inspired all of those around him as he never gave up. He will always be remembered....

  william Thienel, known by his friends and family as Bill, Billy, Chill, or even Rallo, was born in Smithtown,NY on Sept. 21, 1970. He was baptized, received first comunion, and confirmed at the Assunption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in Centereach, NY. Bill attended, Wood Road School, then Wing St., on to Dawnwood J.H., and finally Centereach High School. There he graduated in the class of 1988. After school he worked for Tyree Co. building gas stations, eventually across the country. In between stints with Tyree, Bill worked as a carpenter installing siding and windows. After Tyree Bill worked with his friend Matt Dinapoli [ who is up in heaven with him ] testing and repairing gas station tank systems. He wasn't afraid of hard or tough work, even working in sub-zero temps building gas stations in the Mid-West. In his leisure Bill was a natural at golf. Picking up the game when he was 12yrs old. After playing only a couple weeks he entered a tournament, playing against 13 and 14 year olds. He won it and was hooked. Billy then went on to play on the CHS team. After school Bill would play whenever possible playing with his friends Wharty, Wally, Howie, Mike, Hector, John, Steve, and Tommy Mang. to name a few. Even losing his left eye to diabetic complications couldn't keep him off the course. Another passion of his was drawing. Bill loved to draw in pencil and got hooked on rennassaince art. This was another thing he excelled at and loved. Billy always had the biggest smile and dimples that you would never forget. Even when he was dealt a bad hand as a child, and was diagnosed with diabetes, he kept on as if it was part of life and never let it keephim down. Our mom even said that he was the one to get diabetes because he was the strong one who could handle it. He was and he did. Bill was always there for you and never asked for or expected anything in return. He was always more worried about who he was wiyh more than himself, even when he was at his worst.He never missed work no matter how banged up he was. Even after he was disabled when his body first started failing him. Never had a bad word or was cynical towards anyone or anything, he accepted everyone for who they were. Anyone who knew Bill would agree he had the heart of a lion and the greatest inner strength. For all he endured he kept pressing on. He was my Hero and I'm sure an inspiration to many he touched. He was my brother and best friend and I will miss him every second forever.

I can not believe it has been a year.  Love and miss you every day.

Billy....you are in my thoughts on your first anniversary in heaven. All of us "Frey's" will always remember all the good times we had being neighbors in Lake Grove.  We know you are in a good place along with Mom and Dad by your side.  You will never be forgotten......God Bless You Billy!

It was a pleasure meeting you although it was unfortunately at my brother's funeral. You held a special place in Mat's heart.  I am sure he has been watching over you and is waiting to welcome you.

It is with such a sad and heavy heart that I share your sorrow. I am still in shock as I had just visited Billy Friday when we said we'd see eachother soon in the neighborhood. I remember Billy's great stories and sense of humor. I will always carry with me his amazing strength in coping with the endless obstacles he faced. He took each one in stride and never once complained. I will never understand why one person had to endure so much. I am so incredibly sorry for your loss Rich, and your entire family. Please let it somehow be of comfort to know that your little brother lives on in those of us fortunate enough to have known him. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. God Bless You Billy.

My childhood memories of Lake Grove are full of your smiling face. It is how I will always remember you. Thienel family, please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to Heaven and bring you home again.
