The eldest of five children, he graduated from Kashmere Gardens High School in Houston, TX, in 1964. Afterward, Don served in the United States Air Force (USAF) until 1968.

Don was brought up in the Catholic Church and was an active member of Saint Thomas More Catholic Church in Baton Rouge.
Any visitor to Don's home heard the din of amateur (HAM) radio in the background. A man of many interests, he was passionate about technology and current events and enjoyed playing dominoes and cards, hunting, fishing, barbequing, and smoking meat, mainly brisket.
Throughout his life, Don served his community through various organizations, including Telephone Pioneers of America, Knights of Columbus, and union steward. He also belonged to hunting clubs and amateur radio organizations.
