

He was born in Tuscaloosa, AL on August 8, 1945 to Ethel and Earlie Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Mitchell, and their parents.
On March 6, 1969, he married his wife, Shirley Mitchell. Together, they built a beautiful life and family. Earl was the best Daddy in the world to his three children: Jon Mitchell (Katrina), Joseph Mitchell (Ethel), and Robin Tackentien (Greg). He was a loving and amazing grandfather to his six grandchildren: Courtney, Cayleigh, Gracie, Noah, Sophia, and Colby. He was a very proud great-grandfather to Carter, Kinslee, Zoey, and Maisee.
Earl honorably served his country in the United States military, where his bravery and dedication were recognized with the Purple Heart — an achievement that reflected his courage, selflessness, and commitment to others. After his military service, Earl spent many years working as a lineman, a career he approached with pride, discipline, and an exceptional work ethic. He was deeply dedicated to his job and took great satisfaction in providing for his family through honest, hard work until his retirement. Earl’s life was marked by service, perseverance, and integrity, leaving a legacy that will continue through the many lives he touched.
Earl will be remembered as an amazing and devoted father who loved his children and grandchildren deeply and without condition. His family was the center of his world, and he took great pride in being present, supportive, and steady in their lives. He was a man of quiet strength and unwavering love, always showing up for his children and grandchildren in the ways that mattered most. Known for his kindness and generosity, Earl never hesitated to help neighbors, friends, or anyone in need, offering his time, skills, and heart freely.
Earl’s legacy is one of love, service, and hard work, and he will be remembered always for the strength of his character and the depth of his devotion to his family, his community, and his country.
A graveside service will be held for Earl on Thursday, January 29, 2026 at 11:45am at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama. Procession begins line up at 11:30am.
