

Garland “Gary” “Poppa” Baynes, Sr., passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at the age of 81. He was the beloved husband of the late Josephine Lovoi “Momma Jo” Baynes. Loving father of Garland Baynes, Jr. (Patricia), Lynette Baynes Burtchael Shuff (Billy), Suzi Baynes Kline (Mark), and the late Angel Jeannemarie Baynes. Son of the late Charles and Jesse Necaise Baynes. Raised by Kenneth and Carrie Necaise Gatewood. Brother of Jeannie Gatewood Haas, Theda Baynes Lake, Essie Baynes Bourgeois, Cottan “Buddy” Faye, Estus “Chuck” Gatewood and the late Shirley G. McAllister, “G.G.” Falgout, Marguerite G. Boesch and Merle B. Archer. He is also survived and fondly remembered by his 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Gary was a native of Kiln, Mississippi and a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish. He was a Retired Master Chief (E9) who proudly served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a member of the Chief Petty Officers Association, American Legion and the V.F.W. He was well loved and will be forever remembered as a loving and loyal husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and a friend of many, who loved his country and treasured his family. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Thursday, May 14th from 5:00PM – 9:00PM with a celebration of Gary’s life beginning at 7:00PM. A burial ceremony will take place on November 1st in Bayou Coco Cemetery in Kiln, MS.
