Born in Minnesota and raised in Atlanta, James graduated from North Fulton High School as a member of the Class of 1988. From an early age, he made it clear that his loyalties followed his heart rather than his hometown. Even while surrounded by Falcons fans, James proudly and unapologetically remained a lifelong New Orleans Saints fan, his devotion to the Black & Gold never once wavering. In time, he followed that love south, moving to New Orleans, a city that felt like home to him long before it ever was by address. There, he found culture, laughter, and a deep sense of belonging and it was there that he met the love of his life, his beloved wife, Sonia. Together, they built a life rooted in love, joy, and shared adventures. James proudly called New Orleans home for the past 30 years, a place that matched his spirit and captured his heart.
James dedicated many years with Restaurant Technologies Inc. as a National Account Sales Executive traveling extensively to support his accounts. He took pride in his work, always guided by integrity, kindness, and a deep respect for others. He valued the professional relationships he formed over the years, they were meaningful and reflected the genuine care he brought to every part of his life.
James was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (B.P.O.E.), New Orleans Lodge No. 30, where he found fellowship, purpose, and lasting friendships. Initiated on June 14, 2002, he dedicated 24 years to the lodge, serving with commitment and heart. He held the position of Exalted Ruler from 2012 to 2013 and later served as a Lodge Trustee, always giving generously of his time and talents.
James had a special passion for supporting youth and community programs, serving as Chairman of Youth Activities and the Americanism Essay Contest at both the lodge level and with the LEA State. He established the Elks Dictionary Program providing dictionaries to third graders in the community by collecting change from the lodge’s candy machine. He hosted many couchon de lait fundraisers to support autism awareness and families affected by autism, always believing in inclusion and kindness. His heart for giving was especially evident through his leadership of the annual LSU vs. Alabama Tailgate Cook Off, which raised funds for Christmas Baskets and brought joy to families in need.
Known for his welcoming spirit, he served as Bar Manager and had a gift for bringing people together, creating cherished traditions such as the Luau and the Kentucky Derby Party, In recognition of his dedication and lasting impact, he was honored as the Louisiana Elk of the Year in 2020. His presence will be deeply missed, and his involvement was genuinely appreciated.
James was honored as a Kentucky Colonel, the highest honor bestowed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, recognizing individuals for noteworthy accomplishments, service to their community, and outstanding character.
At the heart of everything James did was his family. Being a father was his greatest joy and proudest role, and he poured that same love, patience, and generosity into his children that he shared with everyone around him. He will be remembered not only for his service to the community, but most of all for the incredible dad he was to Natalie, Nathan, and Nolan.
In his final months, James became passionate about helping others avoid the pain his family now feels. True to his style, he would say, “Hey, don’t forget to check your feet!” A lighthearted way to remind us to do a quick skin check from head to toe, because melanoma can show up in spots we do not often think about.
