John Elmer Garrity Jr.

John Elmer Garrity, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at the Carpenter House hospice at the age of 84. He was the beloved husband of 64 years to Doris Rome Garrity. Father of Kathleen Garrity Lopez (Richard). Son of the late John Elmer Garrity, Sr. and the late Eleanora Sonderegger Garrity. Son of the late Loretta Benitez. Brother of Marilyn Garrity Cormier (Emery-deceased), Richard Pat Garrity (Roseann) and Bonnie Garrity Hebert (Bobby). Preceded in death by his brothers Harold Roy Garrity (Hilda) and Frank Charles Garrity. He was the proud grandfather of Ashlie Lopez Erwin (Benjamin) and Christopher John Lopez (Jacey). He was the great grandfather of Jackson Tindall Erwin and Gavin Cuenca Erwin. He is also survived and fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews. John was born in New Orleans on November 7 ,1930 and was a resident of St. Bernard parish for 50 years prior to hurricane Katrina. Upon his death he was a resident of Harahan, Louisiana. John was a proud United States Marine serving active duty during the Korean War. He was employed by Kaiser Aluminum in Chalmette for 35 years until his retirement. John was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his weekly fishing trips with his best friend the late Mr. Anthony Rigaud. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Monday, October 26th from 11:00AM – 1:00PM, followed by a Funeral Mass in John’s memory beginning at 1:00PM. He will be laid to rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
